Water is Life.Understanding SDG 6 In Cameoon.

Introduction

Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6) was created by the United Nations to make sure that everyone has access to clean water and proper sanitation. This goal is very important in  Cameroon because many people still struggle to find safe water and good toilets. Water is something we use every day, but for some families, getting it is not easy.

Why clean water and sanitation matter

Clean water helps people stay healthy. When people drink dirty water, they can get diseases like cholera and typhoid fever. These diseases can be very dangerous, especially for children.

Sanitation is also important. Having clean toilets and good hygiene practices, like washing hands, helps stop the spread of germs. When communities do not have these, people get sick more often, and it affects school attendance and daily life.

General situation in Cameroon

In cities like Yaounde and Douala, many people have access to tap water, but the supply is not always regular. Sometimes water does not flow for days.

In rural areas, the situation is harder. People often walk long distances to fetch water from rivers or wells. This water is not always clean. Also, some families do not have proper toilets, which creates health problems.

Case Study: Far North Region of Cameroon

A good example can be seen in the Far North Region. This region is one of the driest parts of Cameroon, and water is very scarce.

In many villages, women and children wake up early in the morning to walk several kilometers just to find water. Sometimes, they spend hours under the sun carrying heavy containers. The water they collect is often from ponds or shallow wells, which can be dirty.

Because of this, diseases like cholera spread easily. During some periods, there have been outbreaks that affected many families. Children miss school because they are sick or because they have to help fetch water.

To improve the situation, organizations like UNICEF and NGOs have built boreholes (deep wells) in some communities. These boreholes provide cleaner and safer water. In villages where boreholes exist, life has improved. Children have more time for school, and families are healthier.

Sanitation programs have also been introduced. People are taught how to build simple toilets and the importance of washing hands. These small changes are helping to reduce diseases.

Challenges in achieving SDG 6

Even with these efforts, many challenges remain. Some boreholes break down and are not repaired quickly. There is also not enough funding to build water systems everywhere.

Climate change makes things worse. In the Far North, long dry seasons reduce water sources. Population growth also increases the demand for water, especially in cities.

Another problem is awareness. Some people still do not understand the importance of hygiene practices, which slows progress.

Conclusion

SDG 6 is very important for the future of Cameroon. Clean water and sanitation are basic needs for a healthy life. The case of the Far North Region shows both the difficulties and the progress being made.

To achieve this goal, everyone must be involved. The government, organizations, and citizens must work together. Simple actions like protecting water sources, building toilets, and washing hands can make a big difference.

With more effort and support, Cameroon can improve access to clean water and sanitation, and give its people a better and healthier life.
